TRAUMA THERAPY

HEAL + RECOVER + EMERGE

Trauma is a word that is often used to refer to a range of different types of events. Traumatic events such as war, natural disasters, community violence, childhood and adult victimization, and sudden loss affect people across cultures and other areas of difference. It is also important to understand that the experience of trauma is subjective. We feel “traumatized” when an adverse event or continued conditions overwhelms or exceeds our capacity to cope. In this way, there are many events or experiences in our lives that may have been ‘traumatic’ or overwhelming yet we often do not label them as such.

Reactions to trauma are also subjective. Many people who experience a trauma will not develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD. This does not mean that we were not deeply affected by the event or situation. Many of us may become anxious, depressed, or turn to emotional eating, alcohol, or other substances to cope. We may find that it affects our relationships, our ability to work in the same way that we used to and it may shift the way we view ourselves and the world.

While trauma recovery is a process, it is possible to find meaning, healing, and even post-traumatic growth. Therapy can be beneficial in this process. As a trauma specialist, Dr. DeLoach is uniquely qualified to work with individuals and families who have experienced a range of types of trauma. She has specialized training in EMDR (an empirically supported treatment for reprocessing traumatic memories) as well as refugee trauma. Her strengths-based approach to trauma recovery focuses on holistic reprocessing and integration of traumatic memories and sensory experiences to foster resilience and post-traumatic growth.
